Facebook facts: Not having Facebook account is considered abnormal

Facebook is the undisputed leader in the social networking space. More than 955 million people use Facebook worldwide. This social networking giant is such a pervasive force in the modern world that many employers and even some well-known psychologists believe people who do not have a Facebook account are abnormal.

Der Taggspiegel is a popular magazine in Germany. This magazine goes so far as to point out that lack of Facebook account is the common factor in accused theater shooter James Holmes and Norwegian mass murderer Andres Behring Breivik.

According to a Forbes.com report, human resource departments of many multinational corporations are wary of job aspirants who do not have Facebook account. They say that lack of Facebook could mean that the person’s account could be so full of red flags that it had to be deleted.

Emily Yoffee is an advice columnist at Slate.com. Emily wrote in his column that people should not date those who don’t have Facebook account. He wrote, “If you’re of a certain age and you meet someone who you are about to go to bed with, and that person doesn’t have a Facebook page, you may be getting a false name. It could be some kind of red flag,”

Emily Yoffee points out that these judgments don’t apply to the elderly who are already productive adults before the prevalence of social media. In fact that tech news site Slashdot summed up Der Taggspiegel’s story about social networking as “not having a Facebook account could be the first sign that you are a mass murderer.”

The article at Slashdot points out that Holmes, who is accused of killing 12 people and an unborn child and wounding 58 others at a movie theater inAurora,Colorado; and Breivic, who mercilessly murdered 77 people with a car bomb and mass shooting, did not have Facebook account. In fact they had negligible online presence. Holmes was a member of Adult Friend Finder and Breivik used MySpace.

Using Facebook has become a sign of having a healthy social network. Lack of friends is the common feature in the lives of noted mass murderers like Holmes. Using Facebook is very normal among adults, mostly young adults, worldwide. Not being on this social network is a sign that you are abnormal and dysfunctional or even dangerous, according to some experts.

It is not difficult to open an account with Facebook. All you need to do is to go to the website and sign up by providing basic information like first name, last name, email address, etc.
